The Old Santa Fe Trail, now a National Scenic Byway, originated in Independence, Missouri and terminated here. Visit the downtown Santa Fe Historic District to immerse yourself in the area’s history and culture. The Catholic Church has been a large part of the history of the southwest; the country’s oldest church, San Miguel Mission and the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, completed in 1886 are located here. Don’t miss the Loretto Chapel, built in 1878 in Gothic-Revival style, to see its miraculous staircase.
The Indian Market is held each year in Santa Fe. A hundred thousand collectors, gallery owners, artists from over 100 tribes and art enthusiasts gather for this event. Other visitors come to explore the Georgia O’Keefe Museum which celebrates the famed American artist’s contributions to the American Modernism movement.
The performing arts are alive and well in Santa Fe, with opera, theater and symphony performances scheduled regularly. Just off the Santa Fe Plaza is the New Mexico Museum of Art, displaying everything from Southwestern to contemporary works.
Just north of the city you will find Bandalier National Monument and Pecos National Park. Study eight Northern Indian pueblos and ancient petroglyphs to learn about their culture and traditions. Of course, the outdoor parks are perfect for hiking, rock climbing and river rafting. Winter in the mountains is perfect for skiing and snowboarding, while summertime brings opportunities to golf, hike and bike.
